How many pages is 1,000 words?
1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced and 4 pages double-spaced. That's in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins, the format most essays and school papers ask for.
In Arial, the same 1,000 words come out at about 2.2 pages single-spaced and 4.5 double-spaced, because Arial's letters are wider.
How many words are on a page?
A single-spaced page in Times New Roman 12 pt holds about 500 words. At 1.5 spacing it holds about 333, and double-spaced about 250.
Headings, short paragraphs, lists and quotes all take extra room, so a page with a lot of them holds fewer words. Treat the numbers here as an estimate, and check the page count in your word processor before you hand anything in.
How the font and size change the page count
To compare fonts, I set the same text in each one on a page with 1-inch margins and counted how many words fit. Compared with Times New Roman, a page holds about 6% fewer words in Calibri, 11% fewer in Arial and 31% fewer in Courier New.
Size matters more than the font. Letters get wider and lines get taller as the size goes up, so 11 pt fits about 19% more words than 12 pt, and 14 pt about 27% fewer.
How many pages is a book?
Printed books use smaller pages than a sheet of Letter paper. A typical paperback has about 300 words a page, so an 80,000-word novel comes to about 267 pages. The same novel is about 160 pages single-spaced or 320 double-spaced as a manuscript.
To see how long a book or an essay takes to read, use the reading time calculator. At the average speed of 238 words a minute, 1,000 words take about 4 minutes.
