What’s a good reading speed?

The average adult reads non-fiction in English at about 238 words a minute, and fiction at about 260. Those numbers come from a 2019 review by Marc Brysbaert that pooled 190 studies. A 2016 review by Keith Rayner and colleagues put skilled adult readers at about 200 to 400 words a minute.

Reading much faster than that usually means skimming, and you keep less of the text. That’s why this test asks three questions too: a fast score only counts if you understood what you read. For ways to get through more without losing the meaning, read how to read faster without forgetting what you read.
